Give Up I Can’t

Have you ever noticed that as you grow up your parents when they want you to do something they used the words like no you can’t or that is not a good idea. Especially if it relates to things that you really want to accomplish. We do it in our own lives, “I wish we could but we can’t right now” or “I wish I was able to.”

If at anytime in life you start using this phrase stop it. This is a conditioned response that we usually get from society as a whole. People like to limit us to what they think we can and can’t do and we usually adopt that outlook as well. Just try to right down in a day the negative things that we say about what we are able to do.

Our brain is conditioned to respond to the things we command it to do. I have a daughter who can do anything for a two year old. She can climb anything. She eats everything. But whenever she wants something she will stop at nothing in order to get it to point of me giving in at times. If you take the position of what it was like to be a toddler there is nothing to stop us from accomplishing what we want out of life.

You have to be the one to take responsibility for believing you can. If you believe you can does it really matter what anyone else thinks? I have some pretty lofty goals and I have mentioned them to a number of people, and their reaction is mostly on the negative side. They usually suggest something a little more conservative to try to attain, but the fact of the matter is I don’t want to limit myself to what others think I can’t do. I know what I believe I can do and I will accomplish those things.

Can Do

There is important statistic out there about people who have achieved in life. 20% of the millionaires in this country never set foot in college. Of the 222 billionaires in the world 21 of them did not receive their college diploma’s, including Bill Gates. This not to say that education is not important. The point here is that these people believed in themselves and do you think they every said to themselves I can’t do this. No! They knew they could and they did, they accomplished what they said they would do.

Do ThisI really like Stephen Covey’s book Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. He has an exercise that I would suggest trying for a day. Listen for a full day to your language and the language of others around you and note how many times you hear the words “I Can’t”, “If only.” After you have done this write down 5 I can statements that relate to what you want to do in life and repeat those twice a day and you will begin to see a change in how you think and do things.
